The Insignias

The Command-at-Sea Pin

Since 1960, the Navy has awarded Officers in the rank of Lieutenant to Admiral, serving in command of a qualifying command (ship, squadron, strike group, etc), the Command-at-Sea pin "to recognize the responsibilities placed on those officers of the Navy who are in command, or who have successfully commanded, ships and aircraft squadrons of the fleet".

The six stars on the command pin represent the six original frigates of the United States Navy, authorized by the Naval Act of 1794, the United States, Constellation, Constitution, Congress, President, and Chesapeake.

Of the six original frigates that began the United States Navy, only Constitution remains and is the world’s oldest commissioned warship afloat and the world’s oldest sailing vessel still capable of sailing under its own power.
