SKIPPER'S SUMMARY

Update from the CO

1st Quarter 2025

The DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA (SSBN-826) command, established in March 2024 at General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, CT, has now completed over a year of focused effort in preparation for the boat's commissioning.

Our initial cadre of approximately 80 Sailors, continue to provide vital support to Electric Boat in preparation for system testing and operation. These Sailors, assigned for 3-4 years, form the foundation of our crew and are dedicated to becoming subject matter experts on the COLUMBIA class. We anticipate continued growth in the crew over the next few years, ultimately reaching a complement of over 300 personnel across both BLUE and GOLD crews.

Construction of DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA is progressing steadily. This summer marks a significant milestone as we welcome our next increment of non-nuclear ratings. These Sailors will commence training on the tactical and strategic weapons systems integral to this new class of submarine, further advancing our operational readiness.

The dedication and talent of our crew remain our greatest strength. We are committed to a robust training and qualification program, ensuring our Sailors possess the expertise required for successful operation of DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. Several crew members are temporarily assigned on other operational units, gaining valuable experience and qualifications to bring back to the command.

It is with great pride that we recognized EMN1(SS) James Nirva as our Sailor of the Year and MMN1(SS) Gracie Machin as our Junior Sailor of the Year. Their exceptional performance and commitment embody the spirit of excellence within our command.

We look forward to the continued progress of DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA and the integration of new crew members as we move closer to commissioning.
